ALOP-COCHABAMBA-BOLIVIA-2015

The next Workshop on Active Learning in Optics and Photonics (ALOP) of the UNESCO will take place in the city of Cochabamba, Bolivia (23-27 November 2015) and is organized by the Universidad Privada Boliviana (UPB).

For several years already, UNESCO promotes programs to help teachers in the use of new methodologies in several areas of Natural Sciences, and more particularly in Physics, through training workshops in several Latin American countries.

One of those programs is the Workshop on Active Learning on Optics and Photonics (ALOP), where a novel pedagogical methodology in active learning is applied. It consists in allowing students building their own knowledge through simple experiments and comparing the obtained results with the ideas that the students could have about the observed phenomenon. In this learning process, the teacher plays the role of a guide and facilitator, thus replacing the traditional exposition-based learning. Another of the characteristics of the UNESCO workshops is to implement the active learning methodology through labs, which require low-cost materials and are easy to reproduce.

The Workshop targets high-school teachers and first years’ university professors of Latin American countries. It is expected that they apply the learned methodologies and contribute to their later dissemination through new workshops, where the current trainees become trainers.

The Universidad Privada Boliviana (UPB), through its Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering section, and its Optics and Energy Research Center (Centro de Investigaciones Ópticas y Energía – CIOE), was designated by UNESCO to organize the ALOP Workshop this year in Cochabamba-Bolivia.

UNESCO will grant registration scholarships to Bolivian high-school teachers and university professors that are accepted to participate. The registered participants will be notified about the acceptance of the granted scholarships rapidly. The free registration includes lunch and coffee breaks during the entire event.
